my simple color process by wulfmune my simple color process by wulfmune
okay so here is some stages of working on my latest illustration, as i've gotten a few requests for tutorials. eh i kind of suck at tutorials so this will have to do instead >_<

stage 1- sketches of characters are overlapped with sketch of background. i draw them on separate layers of paper on a light box because it gets rather messy and confusing if i don't. i find it easier to deal with the layout of the room this way.

stage 2- revised cats as per request of commissioner. inked with micron pens. scanned at 600 dpi. cleaned up black and white levels in photoshop and ran a very slight paint daub filter to smooth the edges of lines.

stage 3- i duplicate the line layer and set it on multiply. then i color flat tones on the bottom layer in their "true color"

stage 4- made a new layer grouped on top of the flat colors. using a grey tone, i shade the image and adjust the layer to hard light and lower the opacity.

stage 5- [link]
added a layer for soft blush, hightlights and multiple layers of gradient effects and color for lighting.

Are you ever going to make book 3???

I love your "2 volume" mangas, but there wasn't any romance in them. What's going on???? Why the huge delay?? Don't TELL me you've discontinued it?!!?
NO!! NOT ANOTHER GOOD ARTIST WHO'VE STOPPED WORKING ON THEIR MANGA!! :cries: :cries: :cries:

It wasn't really her choice... apparently Tokyopop had some issues and hasn't agreed to publish the third volume as of yet. It sucks.

Why????? The fans have been waiting all this time and Tokyopop is going to F**** us up like that?!!?
I know they use to release a few yaois back in the days, but now they don't anymore. But how come they're still bringing out Loveless and new Gravitation? It doesn't make sense!!!!

i really like the colors you have in this version as opposed to the final. these colors *feel* like the offbeat world... maybe because it is the sort of colors you used on the covers?

i laughed at how there are so many cats everywhere. a nest of cats, and tory doesn't seem to mind. heh heh.

they are so adorable!!!!!! <3

oh, and i loved all the little mini comics you did! thank you! :D

p.s. is there any hope for offbeat 3 ever coming out? i tried finding some information but i couldn't find where you may have mentioned something.

perhaps~ i think the original colors look a bit bolder..but i felt i needed to add the mood lighting to get the feeling of atmosphere i wanted.

i have no new news about offbeat 3 sadly.

oh darn. i really hope you get to do volume 3.... i'm incredibly attached to the series. T__T

(i know the mood you were going for. sorry if i sounded critique-y. i was just mentioning my preference... either way though, it looks awesome) :D

This is really interesting! :) No, really, I mean it! I usually color in much the same way as you do, but you added some usdeful little tricks to the process (like doing the outlines on two different pieces of paper, or setting the outlines on a layer transparency in PS).

Thank you very much for that walkthrough! I think it's even more useful that way (at least to me) than a full tutorial.

And can I add that I  the motive to pieces too? ;)

Copy that ;). Even processes that seem basic or fast to do can bring forth a great result - that's why I believe, too :).

Looking at stages 3 and 4, I immediately thought "Off*Beat cover".
It would be so awesome if you could have used this as a cover.

O.O; Wow I'm sorry I had no idea how much work I was putting you through, you make it sound so EASY when you just pop up with an "Oh by the way here's the pencil sketch" and a "Here you go it's done ^^"

I actually recommend that you put the pencil sketch up in full size on dA too because it fascinates me just as much as the final image. There's just something so mercurial, so fleeting about it...like you just happened to catch such a private moment by accident.

lol I was looking in my little Thesaurus widget on my mac for mercurial because whimsical wasn't quite the right word and both queer and offbeat came up as synonyms. I don't know why that's hilarious but it is xD
